NBA ALL-STAR 2002
Basketball: The Game – On & Off The Court, A Grass-Roots Educational Forum
Philadelphia, PA, January 14, 2002 - In celebration of Black History Month and the
2002 NBA All-Star game, The African American Museum in Philadelphia and KD
Communications Group present Basketball: The Game – On & Off The Court, a grass-roots educational forum on Friday, February 8, 2002, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the
African American Museum in Philadelphia located at 701 Arch Street.
The educational forum is intended for inner city youth participating in sports
in the Philadelphia, Delaware and New Jersey areas. Young people will join current
NBA players, legends, sports columnists and sportscasters in exciting dialogue about
BASKETBALL: THE GAME – ON & OFF THE COURT. Frank discussions on
topics such as, “The urban market and the influences it has had on the GAME”, “Why
are professional athlete’s heroic figures in the eyes of the youth around the world?” and
“What responsibility do athletes have to the youth (if any)?” “We are excited to be
hosting this educational event with KD Communications Group. This program has the
purpose and intent to educate and engage its attendees ‘up close and personal’ by
allowing the young people an opportunity to interact with invited NBA
players as well as the ‘players’ behind the scene,” said Gladys Adams, Bookings and
Facility Usage Manager for the African American Museum in Philadelphia.
Panelists include Emanual Davis, starting guard for the Atlanta Hawks,WNBA star Kelley Gibson of the Houston Comets, Julani Ghana, 76ers Community
Relations Manager, Stephen A. Smith, Basketball Columnist for the Inquirer and
National Basketball Insider/Analyst Fox Television, Que Gaskins, Managing Partner, the
ad*itive, Sharon Swainson, Chief Communications Officer for the Phillies, Kevin
Parker, President, Capitol Consulting Group and Bill Vargus, Weekend Sports Anchor,
Fox Philadelphia. Other invited guests include the Philadelphia 76ers mascot: Hip Hop,
World B. Free and NBA players Eric Snow and Jerry Stackhouse.
“Many of the events taking place during the NBA All-Star 2002 are not
within financial reach of most young people. Our motivation is to grant special access to
these youth so that they too can take part in the festivities during this very exciting time,”
said Kellie L. Dutton, partner with KD Communications Group.
“We will also discuss other options and careers that are within arms reach of theGAME even if you are not an athlete, since statistically only 2% of hopeful athletes
actually become professional ball players,” said Dawn A. Jones, partner with
KD Communications Group.
“This educational vehicle is the tool to show the youth of the Tri-State area that
Philadelphia is in fact “the city that cares!” We are looking for sponsors to assist us as
we ‘give back’ to our community and its future,” added Jones.
